529: Thou Art The Way, None Other Dare I Follow

Book:   1987 Song Book
Chapter:   The Life of Holiness

1.
Thou art the way, none other dare I follow;
Thou art the truth, and thou hast made me free;
Thou art the life, the hope of my tomorrow;
Thou art the Christ who died for me.
This is my creed, that 'mid earth's sin and sorrow,
My life may guide men unto thee.

2.
Hold thou my feet, let there be no returning
Along the path which thou hast bid me tread;
Train thou my mind, I would be ever learning
The better way thy fame to spread;
Keep thou my heart ablaze with holy burning
That love for souls may ne'er be dead.

3.
I would bring peace to lives now torn asunder,
Ease aching hearts with words that soothe and heal;
I would bring peace when, breaking like the thunder,
Men rise in war, and hatred feel.
Peacemaker, Lord! Now I am stirred to wonder;
O take me, and my calling seal!

Thou art the way, none other dare I follow

after Tunstall Band played the selection 'Scandinavian Songs'at a congress festival in the City Hall, Birmingham, 25 October1937, the British Commissioner, Charles Rich, asked the author to write some words for the tune 'Finlandia'. While travelling by train from London to Leeds, he sketched out the words of the first verse, which he completed during another congress festival, in the Drill Hall, Leeds, I November 1937. He said,'about this time I was worried because even some Christians were beginning to question the very existence of God, and I thought it good to make a reaffirmation of my Creed.' The first verse was printed as a chorus on a sheet of Congress Choruses(December 1937), and also appeared in The Bandsman and Songster,4 December 1937. Later he added the second and third verses when he was asked to write a dedication song for cadets of the 'Peacemakers' Session in Melbourne,, 1949-50. The Song was published in The Warrior, August 1950, with the title'Christ is the Way', and was then included. in The Song Book of The Salvation Army, 1953.
