283: And Can It Be That I Should Gain

Meter:   8.8.8.8.8.8. Iambic
Book:   1987 Song Book
Chapter:   The Gospel

1.
And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Saviour's blood?
Died he for me who caused his pain,
For me who him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

2.
He left his Father's throne above,
So free, so infinite his grace,
Emptied himself of all but love
And bled for Adam's helpless race.
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me.

3.
Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature's night;
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray;
I woke; the dungeon flamed with light.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed thee.

4.
No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in him, is mine.
Alive in him, my living head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne
And claim the crown, through Christ, my own.

And can it be that I should gain

Published by John and Charles Wesley in Hymns and Sacred Poems, 1739, with the title: 'Free Grace'. (Although some handbooks, following Julian's Dictionary of Hymnology, have said that it appeared in A Collection of Psalms and Hymns,1738, this seems to by incorrect.) It has been suggested that Charles Wesley wrote this hymn at the time of his conversion,2l May 1738, but Frank Baker (Representative Verse of Charles Wesley, 1962, p9) concludes that the hymn written on that occasion was probably 'Where shall my wondering soul begin'. Some hymnologists, including Edward Houghton (The Hymm Society BuHetin, September 1979, pp93-99), have argued that 'and can it by' was one of the hymns probably written by John Wesley rather than Charles. However, as John and Charles Wesley did not distinguish their individual contributions to books which they published jointly, this cannot by established with certainty.
