Rouse An entry in a Church Book kept by Robert Robinson said that this hymn was published in 1758 by Mr Wheatley of Norwich.This publication has not been traced, though subsequently the hymn, with four eight-line verses, was included in A Collection of Hymns used by the Church of Christ in Angel-Alley,Bishopsgate, 1759, and A Collection of Hymns, for the Use of the Hearers of the Apostles, 1777 . Three eight-line verses were in A Collection of Psalms and Hymns 1760, compiled by Martin Madan. The chorus is from the song 'Precious Saviour, thou hast saved me', by Louise M. Rouse, which appeared in Winnowed Hymns: A Collection of Sacred Songs, 1873, edited by C. C.McCabe and D. T. Macfarlan.
