Entitled 'Song of the Salvation Army', in The Savationist ,1 February 1879, where it was signed 'Bradford. W. J. Pearson',and then included in a booklet , Hosannn Songs of The Salvation Army,6 July 1879, with the title: 'Our Marching Song'. The author is said to have written the song after hearing the townhall chimes in Bradford play the tune 'Ring the bell, watchman',but the town clerk, writing from Bradford in 1965, said that the carillon which opened in 1873 did not include this tune.)
